P90X Review: Day 1 – The Struggle

So after successfully performed the P90X Fit Test and taking my Body Measurements, Monday was here – Day 1 of the P90X workout.

I have decided to write about my workouts the day after I go through them. This may change, but my thinking is that I can give you a full days report. I can not only tell you how the workout went, but also how my nutrition went – as well as how sore I woke up.

P90X Workout: Day 1

Day 1 was intense – that is the best way I can put it. I was pouring sweat while struggling with the push-ups as well as any back exercises that dealt with the P90X chin-up bar. I fought through it though! Part of me feels like I cheated myself because I couldn’t keep up with Tony or his partners. This hopefully will change once I get in better shape!

After the first workout, came the Ab Ripper X workout. WOW! It is 17 minutes of pure torture. As Tony says, “Ab Ripper X – I have it, but I love it!” Never have truer words been spoken. I struggled with it today, but I can see this being one of my favorite workouts.

Nutrition

This is going to be the real ongoing struggle for me. It’s a lifestyle change. I can’t honestly say I ever “ate right”. Growing up I weighed 160-170lbs. I played basketball every moment I could. I could eat whatever I wanted to, and I would burn right through it. Times have changed, I’m less active – yet my eating is probably just as poor. I don’t mind eating “right”, it’s just going to be a constant conscience effort to make the right choices.

When figuring out which Nutritional Level I should be on, the P90X Nutritional Guide’s formula told me I should be on a 3,000 calories per day diet. This seemed a little too much for me, so I dropped down a level and started on a 2,400 calorie diet. As of day 1, it worked out well. I was never really too hungry, or craving any food. My toughest times will be when I first get home from work and crave that useless snack before dinner (not to mention dessert after dinner).

I am deeply committed to P90X though. If I can master the nutritional end of it, I know the physical end will take care of itself.

Day 1 End Results

So how did I feel this morning? A little sore. My chest is tight, but I think that comes with being so taxed when doing the push-ups (I wasn’t able to do nearly as many as the video wanted). Oh, and I sneezed this morning and thought someone shot me in the stomach. Yea, the Ab Ripper X got me good!
